There is something special about discovering a band right at the beginning of their journey. You can feel the excitement, the hunger, and the love for the music before the rest of the world catches on. That's exactly the kind of energy I felt getting to know Ashley Madden of Blackwater, a new rock band out of Louisville, Kentucky.

Blackwater embraces a sound that feels familiar in the best way — heavy riffs, catchy melodies, and that early 2000s hard rock spirit many of us grew up blasting in the car. In this conversation, Ashley opened up about the band’s influences, their songwriting process, dream tour moments, and what support from fans means at this stage of their career.

About Blackwater

Blackwater is an emerging alternative rock band out of Louisville, Kentucky, bringing together heavy riffs, big melodies, and the kind of early 2000s rock energy that feels instantly familiar. Formed in 2024, the band includes Quentin Utter on guitar and vocals, Aaron Simon on bass and vocals, Ashley Madden on guitar, and Tyler Sturgeon on drums and vocals.

Their sound leans into that hard rock sweet spot — gritty, emotional, melodic, and built for a loud stage. With influences that include Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Chevelle, and Seether, Blackwater carries the spirit of post-grunge and modern alternative rock while shaping it into something of their own.

Even as a newer band, Blackwater is already finding its place in the live music scene. They have earned direct support slots for national touring artists like Cold and have appeared on festival lineups alongside acts such as Saving Abel, Flaw, and Tantric. With a strong live presence and songs made to hit hard while still staying catchy, Blackwater is a band to watch as they continue growing their audience and making noise beyond Louisville.

The Interview

Samantha Ann: Let’s start at the beginning — what’s the name of your band, and where did you all come together?

Ashley Madden: My band is called Blackwater and we originate from Louisville, Kentucky. We have a very “dad rock” early 2000s vibe that we fully embrace. We have some fun riffs and catchy melodies, definitely something you could drive around and sing along to.

Samantha Ann: Who are some of the artists or bands that really inspire you musically, both as a band and personally?

Ashley Madden: For Blackwater specifically, bands like Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, and Three Days Grace have definitely had a big influence on our sound. Outside of that though, my personal influences range any where from Sabrina Carpenter to Lamb of God.

Samantha Ann: Dream-show moment: if Blackwater could open for any artist or band, who would you choose, and what makes them the perfect fit?

Ashley Madden: Breaking Benjamin, easily. They were one of the bands that really made me fall in love with hard rock growing up, and I think our sound would fit really naturally with their crowd. Plus they’ve always balanced heaviness with really strong melodies, which is something we try to do too!

Samantha Ann: For someone who hasn’t heard Blackwater yet, if you had to describe your sound as a mashup of two artists, who would you put together?

Ashley Madden: I’d probably say Seether mixed with Chevelle, maybe with a little bit of that early 2000s radio rock energy thrown in. We’ve also gotten Nickelback comparisons before, and honestly we take that as a compliment because those songs are massive for a reason!

Samantha Ann: What does the songwriting process usually look like for Blackwater? Is it one person bringing in the spark, or more of a full-band collaboration?

Ashley Madden: Quentin, our front man is the ring leader for our songwriting. He brings melodies and guitar parts to the table and we all chime in and tweak it until it’s right for all of us.

Samantha Ann: Let’s get to know you a little beyond the stage — can you share your name, where you’re from, and what you love doing when you’re not making music?

Ashley Madden: My name is Ashley Madden. I’m originally from Dothan, Alabama but now reside in Louisville. Outside of playing guitar, I love spending time with my family, and playing video games with my husband who is my absolute best friend.

Samantha Ann: Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your younger self about chasing music and navigating the industry?

Ashley Madden: I would tell my younger self that the industry is cut throat, it will be full of up and downs. Whether you have 5 monthly listeners or 500,000, just keep pushing through and don’t let the process dampen your love for music.

Samantha Ann: Blackwater is just getting started, but the support is already growing — what would you like to say to the fans, followers, and everyone showing love so far?

Ashley Madden: While Blackwater is brand new and still building our fan base, I’d love to tell all my followers that every little interaction from a simple like on social media to buying a show ticket means the absolute world to me and the band. Thank you so much for the support!

What I love about Ashley’s perspective is how grounded it feels. Blackwater may be new, but the passion is already there — the influences, the work ethic, the appreciation for every listener, and the willingness to keep pushing through the highs and lows of the music industry.

For anyone who loves early 2000s hard rock energy, big melodies, and bands that feel made for singing along on the road, Blackwater is definitely one to keep on your radar. Here at Dia’ani TV | Miami, I’ll be watching their journey closely as they continue building their sound, their stage presence, and their fanbase one song at a time.
