Angela Bassett has had an impressive career that spans over four decades. Known for her work in film and television since the 1980s, she has received various accolades, including two Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for Oscars and Emmys.


Angela's career began onstage in the mid-1980s. Her notable performances include parts in August Wilson's plays Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which was her first professional role, and Joe Turner's Come and Gone. She also appeared in the original cast of John Guare's The Colored Museum.


Born in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City on August 16, 1958, Bassett grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. After receiving her B.A. in African-American studies from Yale University in 1980 and earning a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1983, Bassett worked as a photo researcher and receptionist before her first acting job in a play at Second Stage Theatre, New York.


In the early 1990s, Angela earned industry attention and public recognition for her early performances in the films Boyz n the Hood (1991) and Malcolm X (1992). For her portrayal of Betty Shabazz in the latter, she earned an NAACP Image Award. The movie received a mixed critical reception.


In 1992, Angela acted as Katherine G. Goble in the film Hidden Figures, which earned her a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. She also appeared in the films Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), playing the role of Ramonda.


Throughout her career, Angela has become well-known for her biographical film roles portraying real-life women in African American culture. Perhaps most prominently, she portrayed singer Tina Turner in the motion picture What's Love Got to Do with It (1993), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She is the first and only African-American recipient of the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for this role.


Bassett's other notable roles include Betty Shabazz in the films Malcolm X (1992) and Panther (1995), Rosa Parks in the The Rosa Parks Story (2002), and Coretta Scott King in Betty & Coretta (2013). She has also appeared in the films Waiting to Exhale (1995), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998), and Olympus Has Fallen (2013).


In addition to her work in film, Angela has had a successful career in television. She starred in the series American Horror Story, earning Emmy nominations for her roles in the seasons Coven (2013-2014), Freak Show (2014-2015), and Roanoke (2016). She also appeared in the series The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992), The Rosa Parks Story (2002), and 9-1-1 (2018-2022).


Angela Bassett's career continues to flourish. She has several projects in the works, including the films Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) and The Color Purple (2023). Her longevity and success in the industry are a testament to her talent and dedication.
